Phnom Penh: On 21 April 2020, His Excellency LUY David, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Alternate ASEM Senior Official for Cambodia, chaired the ASEM Coordinators’ Meeting via video conference. The Meeting was participated by ASEM Senior Officials from ASEM Regional Coordinators; namely Russia which is the Coordinator for North East and South Asia (NESA) Group, Singapore for ASEAN Group, and European Group represented by European Union and Croatia as the EU Presidency.
The Meeting discussed ways forward in relation to the preparations for the 13th ASEM Summit (ASEM13) in Phnom Penh in November 2020.
The meeting agenda included: (1) The Role of the ASEM Coordinators; (2) The Preparations for ASEM13; and (3) The Way Forward for ASEM Connectivity.
The Meeting stressed the need to promote concerted efforts, closer collaboration and deeper cooperation among ASEM partners in the two regions to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, to enhance the roles of the ASEM regional coordinators during this substantive crisis as well as to find out more pragmatic solutions to maintain the ASEM momentum, its visibility and relevance amidst this recent global uncertainty.
Cambodia as the Chair of ASEM13 briefly updated the meeting of recent progresses of Kingdom’s preparations for the Summit. Even in these critical circumstances, Cambodia has kept its efforts and momentum of the ASEM process. The Meeting also discussed the possibility of having an actual ASEM Senior Officials’ Meeting (ASEM SOM) Retreat in Siem Reap or via video conference depending on the development of COVID-19 in early July 2020.
The Meeting agreed to convene another ASEM Coordinators’ Meeting via video conference in May 2020 to discuss their further activities leading up to the ASEM13.
